Kiwi Pet Photography Blog – South Florida Pet Photography bio picture
  • Hey there! Welcome to my blog! I'm Stacey Chen: animal lover, photographer, and proud mama to this business called Kiwi Pet Photography. I created Kiwi to give my fellow dog and cat devotees here in South Florida something we didn't have: a source for candid and colorful natural-light portraits of our furry family members and best friends. Check back often for the latest Kiwi news and lots of pictures of some of South Florida's cutest dogs, cats, bunnies, and anything else that runs, hops, or flies my way!

February is Adopt a Rabbit Month! * South Florida Pet Photography

So what better time to put up my very favorite picture from a session a couple of weekends ago for Luv -A-Bun, a rabbit rescue here in South Florida.  I’m helping them make a 2010 fundraising calendar.  I photographed some very cute little baby black bunnies, some fluffy lionheads, and this adorable sweetie.

She was rescued by a kind soul who overheard the employees at a Pet Supermarket talking about her. They had a dilemma because she has cataracts, and is therefore a special needs bunny as she is nearly blind. The pet store folks were considering sending her back to the supplier (to what fate?!) so this volunteer intervened and tried to help the bunny. They wouldn’t let her take it or even buy the rabbit. Thankfully she had a friend who went in and pretended to be an interested customer and was able to buy the bunny and therefore save her from an uncertain future.

Anyway, so February is Adopt A Rescued Rabbit month! I have two myself (both rescues) and just love them to death. Thumper and Piper are extremely gentle, sweet, and adorably affectionate. Every day I walk into their room and see them cuddling and have to tell them how cute they are. Seriously; ask my husband. Oh! And Thumper, when he’s not snuggling with Piper, snuggles with whatever stuffed animal the dogs have left out on his rug. It’s really ridiculously cute. Last night he was snuggling with a giraffe.:)

Lots of pet rabbits have sad stories. A lot of them are impulse buys or Easter gifts, but once the new bunny  owner realizes that bunnies are an actual pet that requires maintenance and medical care, the bunnies get sold or abandoned.  Not to mention, if you don’t take the time to litter train them, cleaning up after them can become really tiring really fast. (Mine both litter trained in the course of a couple of days! Unfortunately most people don’t even know that you can litter train a rabbit.) So of course there are plenty of rabbits for adoption in our local shelters. They are nice pets. Very different from dogs and cats in a way it’d take me a while to explain, but sweet and life enriching.

Check out Petfinder to see what bunnies are available in your area: http://www.petfinder.com.

P.S. Pay no attention to the colors on this this blog! I’ll be working on it this weekend.

Jasmine the Goldendoodle * Fort Lauderdale Pet Photography

Meet Jasmine, a 19-month old Goldendoodle.  Isn’t she just THE CUTEST DOG?!

I felt incredibly lucky.. Not only is Jasmine adorable, but her mom is an interior designer and has a beautiful, bright home.  And look how Jasmine matches the rug – I love it!

Jasmine in another beautiful room:

Jasmine has the sweetest mom and dad, April and Chuck. I am so happy to meet people that dote on their dogs like these two do. And in return for their love, care, and pride, Jasmine gives love like only a doggy can.. She licks and cuddles and follows her mom everywhere.

After snapping some pictures inside, we went out in the back to play.  And oh did we have fun!

I love this picture because it captures what a joyful dog Jasmine is:

Jasmine has the sweetest eyes and super-long lashes…

And look at these fluffy white bear paws!

One of my favorite pictures from our day together:

We were playing outside and she was waiting for me to see if I was going to come back into the bushes with her or not and peeked out. She’s thinking, “Come ON, crazy treat lady!”  Oh, Jasmine!

After two hours that FLEW by (seriously, I could’ve played with her all day), I had to leave little Jasmine. She broke my heart by peeking out the fence at me. I drove home with a huge smile on my face (okay, best job ever?) and then reviewed all of our pictures and just squealed at how cute Jasmine is.

In December I made a nearly spontaneous two-week trip to my hometown, Viroqua, Wisconsin. Let’s just say I moved to Fort Lauderdale for a reason… I absolutely cannot tolerate the cold! And wouldn’t you know, winter had been mild so far. That is, until I arrived. Then we got a blizzard and below-zero temperatures! I was snowed in at my sister’s house for two days. Ay! At least I had my long underwear to keep me warm.

My last day at my sister’s house I grabbed my camera and took her two dogs outside so I could get some pictures to remember them by. I was amazed at how lovely the pictures came out. I guess it makes sense: all that snow reflects the light marvelously.

This is Hailey.

She’s the reason I want a golden retriever someday. She is sweet and so, so gentle. She’s also hilarious because she is totally and utterly obsessed with playing fetch.

Really… I won’t go home for a year and then I show up and she chases the car I’m in with a big stick. Or I’m dragging all my stuff out to the car to go back to the airport and there she is, stick in mouth. She either does that to everyone (likely) or just remembers that I’m a big sucker for dogs and will throw that darn stick until my arm feels ready to fall off. I usually end up throwing ONE LAST stick and then jumping in the car and driving away as fast as I can so I don’t have to say no to her. It breaks my heart because I can always see her in the rearview, chasing the car with the stick hanging from her mouth. “Come back! Who is going to throw my stick?!”

Thankfully for Hailey, my sister has had a couple of kids now. I kid you not that Hailey would bring little sticks and lay them down in front of my nephew Kyle when he was only, like, two years old. Ahh, Hailey…

You can tell what Hailey is thinking here, right? “THROW THE STICK THROW THE STICK THROW THE STICK!!!”

Here’s Hailey playing our toned-down, indoors version of fetch when we were stuck inside on account of the blizzard.

She’s getting on in her years. She can play fetch like a pup, but the next day she’ll seem a bit slow on getting up. That’s one of the hardest things about being away from home — everyone seems to grow old exceptionally fast when you only see them once or twice a year. For dogs it’s multiple times worse.

I love you, Hailey!

Here’s Hailey’s new dog bro, Buzz.

He’s a miniature beagle (whatever that’s supposed to mean!) and just a pup. In fact, while I was there some of his little needle-like puppy teeth fell out!

I think my own dog Gretchen must’ve texted Buzz with my phone or something (she’s smart like that) to tell him the be-extra-cute tips: Paw up, ear back!

I think Buzz has been great for Hailey. She plays with him sometimes just like a puppy. And true, she has to put up with him humping her… a lot… but she loves him anyhow. They sleep all snuggled up. It’s adorable.

Buzz workin’ the puppy dogs eyes inside (my niece was quite messily eating a peanut butter & jelly sandwich and Buzz was correctly guessing that if he stared like this, I’d give him her leftovers).

And now just one last picture, so my other sister’s dog won’t feel left out. Say hi to Sofia, a sweet little pug who spent her first three years as a puppy mill breeder and now getting to enjoy the good life:

Those eyes only LOOK sad.:)

Check back for more pics of Hailey, Buzz, and Sofia sometime this summer!

Buddy Boo the Puggle * South Florida Dog Photography

Buddy is my sister-in-law’s doggy.  She’s on her honeymoon (in Argentina, the lucky!) so we’re watching him.  This means we are temporarily a four-dog household. Talk about hectic! Every time one of the neighborhood dogs bark, the dogs all high-tail it for the backyard so they can bark back. It’s crazy.

Buddy is extremely cute. Patty got him from a pet store as a super sick little puppy. I guess she and my husband weren’t sure he would even make it, but after a lot of TLC and medical care, he did. I think the fever left some lasting effects, though. Buddy gets scared of feathers, smudges on the wall, blades of grass.. No, I’m totally serious. He barked at a feather once for 15 minutes, at which point I had to confiscate it. He would bark at the feather, which would move because of his breath, so he would jump back, scared. And then he’d bark at it. Which would make the feather move. Repeat!

Buddy with Gretchey bokeh:

I have a theory that Buddy is a dog version of a little person.  Check it:

He has a full-size head, torso, tail, and feet.. but short little bowed legs! His head is as big as our Sebastian’s, but he only weighs 17 lbs while Sebastian weighs almost 30! His appearance makes him totally endearing.. Little kids love him especially.

He made a perfect little elf for our Christmas cards in 2008:

Buddy and our dog, Gretchey, are best friends. They are like peas and carrots, as Patty (and Forrest!) says.

Sometimes Gretchey gets to stay over at his house, and whenever he leaves he cries and howls for an hour or so.

Other times we let the other dogs stay over with him so he won’t cry. Last week it was Maggie’s turn. This is one of my favorite pictures of Maggie and Buddy that I took last year:

Buddy isn’t entirely trustworthy when it comes to our cats or his bladder, but he is just the sweetest little thing so it’s hard to blame him.

Happy Birthday, Shannon!

It’s my friend Shannon’s birthday today. That means she’s older than me (ha ha!).  For the next, um, 16 days anyway.

When I was in Wisconsin in December, I stopped by her house one day to take pictures of her doggy, Rosco.

As you can see, he’s adorable. Happy and adorable. And has something hanging from his face.  It’s too bad it wasn’t nicer outside so we could’ve gotten some more, less-white pictures.

What a cutie, eh?

Shannon got Rosco from someone on Craigslist who decided she no longer wanted him.  Rosco is Shannon’s first dog and she is in loooove with having a dog, like the rest of us.  :)

I was using extra-smelly salmon-flavored treats to get his attention. Can you tell?  I call this one “enh.. enh..!”

Mmmmmm!

I love the fluffy-pup look.

Look, he’s smiling!

Not sure if this works, but I love the high-key look.

Happy Birthday, Shannon! Hope you and your little guy enjoyed your special day! Can’t wait until this summer to do a proper, happy-dog, lovely-day shoot for you!
