Kiwi Pet Photography Blog – South Florida Pet Photography bio picture
  • Hey there! Welcome to my blog! I'm Stacey Chen: animal lover, photographer, and proud mama to this business called Kiwi Pet Photography. I created Kiwi to give my fellow dog and cat devotees here in South Florida something we didn't have: a source for candid and colorful natural-light portraits of our furry family members and best friends. Check back often for the latest Kiwi news and lots of pictures of some of South Florida's cutest dogs, cats, bunnies, and anything else that runs, hops, or flies my way!

A few bunny pictures :) * Palm Beach Pet Photography

I’m working on a calendar for Luv-A-Bun Rabbit Rescue. I’ll tell you something: I think bunnies are about the hardest animals to photograph.  They’re usually very skittish, don’t respond to funny  noises, and aren’t food motivated at all out of their comfort zone. However, slowly but surely I’m figuring them out. Maybe I should be testing out techniques on my own bunnies, Thumper and Piper, every day. My subject for the day was to be Hero, the 18-lb Flemish Giant, but he quickly tired of me and my carrots and ran away to his hiding place for the day. I am brainstorming Hero-shoot ideas and will have to go back to see him.

As difficult as they are to photograph, it’s sure worth it when you get a picture you love because bunnies are simply adorable. This is Lizzy, a sweet blue-eyed girl.

And here is the lop-eared bunny, Justice. Don’t tell my straight-eared babies (just like we won’t tell my kitties about my fondness for calicos), but lop bunnies are my faaaavorite. Someday maybe I will get to adopt one, but until then, pictures will do.

Look forward to more bunny pictures soon! And if you happen to live in Broward County and have a bunny you would like to maybe see in the Luv-A-Bun 2011 calendar, drop me an email! I’m looking for some different bunnies in different locations without having to stress anyone out with travel.  Thanks!!

Stacey, these are beautiful. Do you use any artificial light when shooting bunnies? I have an indoor bunny shoot scheduled this weekend for a contest winner and I am afraid there won’t be enough natural light in the home – but I’m also afraid that flash photography will scare the bunny silly! I hate turning up my ISO but I’m not sure I see another alternative – any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey! I try to do everything natural-light only. From what I understand, you can get really good results with flash, but I am not an expert with it and hardly ever like my results. If you can do it by upping the ISO, go that way.. anything over 400 or so and I’m not happy with the noise.. Do you have an external flash? If you point it at the ceiling and have the light reflect back down that way, it may not be as startling for the bun as if you had shot the flash directly at them

What I’ve learned about bunny photography is if they’re uncomfortable (with the situation or you being there or whatever), then put them UP on something they can’t just run away from. A table or a couch, or inside a planter outside. Have a spotter there to move the bunny back in place if s/he makes a mad dash. I am bringing an end table to my next bunny shoot to use. If you have them on the ground, they’re GONE.

Good luck!!!

Cute buns! Love the colors in the bokeh in the background. Looks like having them up on the play-set was the way to go. Too bad we weren’t able to try that with the giant! You’ve got to get a pic of him with the little puppers for scale!
